Marking ten years of leftfield psychedelia, exploratory electronics and genre-spanning experimentation, None More Records presents ‘What Do You Mean By Obsolete? A None More Records Compilation’, a new double LP bringing together exclusive material from artists across the label’s extended community.
Founded by Harry Walsh and Sam Bedford, None More Records has spent the past decade building a catalogue that moves freely between ambient music, folk, dub, neo-soul, electronica, psychedelia and jungle. Throughout that time, the label has remained committed to supporting artists whose work exists between established scenes and categories. ‘What Do You Mean By Obsolete? A None More Records Compilation’ arrives as a celebration of that journey. Sequenced as a day-to-night listening experience, the collection gathers new and previously unreleased material from long-standing collaborators, recent label associates and artists who have become part of the wider None More Records family.
The compilation features contributions from artists including Bobby Lee, Joe Harvey-Whyte, Lo Recordings Jon Tye’s Tears Of Nature project, Monzanto Sound, Noni-Mouse & Sarathy Korwar, C. Roots & Mali-I, Inês Loubet, Dave De Rose, Romaal Kultan, Hooson & Johnson and Paul Cousins, whose closing title track lends the release its name.
Walsh says “One thread that knits these artists together is that they all embrace the sonic invention and melodic architecture of the past while also making innovative music that echoes forward. With much of the music industry now a faceless sea of metrics and algorithms, we wanted to put forward a collection of 100% original work, created by real musicians experimenting and collaborating together as a community.”
Among the collection’s highlights is the inclusion of new material from Orange Can, a group whose music has long been admired by the label and whose reappearance represents the culmination of a years-long search by Walsh and Bedford. Orange Can’s ‘Everything Remains The Same’ is available as a single now.
Finding the band proved far from straightforward. With little online presence to follow, Walsh searched through old YouTube comments, forgotten Myspace pages and eventually LinkedIn, where he made contact with Jason Aslett in 2020. The conversation continued over the years, gradually leading to this release.
“It feels surreal that we’ve finally reached this point,” Walsh says. “After such a long search, being able to share new Orange Can music through the label means a great deal.”
The compilation reflects a philosophy that has guided the label since its earliest days. That eclecticism has been present since the label’s inception. Having started out promoting gigs for artists including Kokoroko, Vels Trio and Lunch Money Life, Walsh and Bedford established None More Records as a way of offering longer-term support to musicians whose work they admired. What began as an instinctive approach to releasing music gradually became something more clearly defined as the catalogue grew.
“As 20-somethings with no prior label experience, the mission statement was simply ‘anything we both love!'” says Walsh. “We started the label as a support network for these amazing musicians and we’re proud to still be working with some of them who were there when we started,” says Bedford. “It’s important for us that the label is true to ourselves and our eclectic tastes. The collection of music here is both a celebration but also a statement of intent about who we are, what we do and why we do it. All new music from artists in our family, from across many different genres.“
As None More Records enters its second decade, the compilation stands as a document of a label built through friendship, collaboration and a belief in following curiosity wherever it leads. “We’re now celebrating our 10th year and have a very eclectic back catalogue, ranging from ambient to psychedelic rock, via Balearic house and jungle. Hopefully listeners can hear that it all makes sense.” says Bedford. “If we both love the music, we’ll give it everything to get people’s ears on it!” says Walsh.
