Today Max Cooper announces his ‘Emergence’ live show and March tour dates.
Emergence is the story of how “everything comes from (almost) nothing” – the groundbreaking visual and musical show sees ex-scientist Cooper create an overpowering sensory and dancefloor experience.
“I worked with lots of different video artists and musicians, plus two mathematicians, putting together content to tell the story I wanted, and a performance system that allows me to control both the music and the visuals simultaneously live. It’s been a challenging project, but a lot of fun, and hopefully is something interesting.”
Ranging freely across time, from the first days of the universe to the fierce intensity of modern society and beyond, Emergence is a one-man show soundtracking pulsing techno, electronica and starkly beautiful beatless passages against the unique visuals of multiple visual artists. Cooper’s critically acclaimed festival and club performances range from experimental sets at MUTEK and sit-down gigs in Paris to pounding out techno to 10,000 people at Awakenings and Igloofest. A common thread of juxtaposition ties his live performances together: ambient and overwhelming, beautiful and furious, excessive and restrained.
Cooper’s previous forays into visual arts have engaged with scientific concepts including complexity, natural form, heredity, dimensionality, gravitation, emergence, number theory and morphogenesis, and his 70+ released tracks are now joined by 23 video works. His recent output has been received with critical acclaim (“Insanely good” – FADER, “Impossibly gorgeous” – FACT, “A quiet elegance that’s unique to the genre” – XLR8R, “One of the most striking live experiences out there” – Mixmag) and he has now had more than 5m plays of his work on Soundcloud alone.
